Who is Yuan Goang-Ming?

For pioneering media artist Yuan Goang-Ming, destruction can be creation.

Yuan Goang-Ming is a pioneering new media artist, sometimes called the “father of Taiwanese video art.” Since creating his first video works in the mid-1980s, he has emerged as one of the foremost Taiwanese artists in the field of new media art, which breaks from conventional materials in favor of digital or interactive technologies.

His work ranges from digital prints and videos to immersive installations where audiences interact directly with light, sound, and even actors. His videos are often projected within a larger installation, surrounded by a specially designed environment.

“For more than 20 years, the art world has always looked forward with anxious anticipation to each new work he creates,” writes Eric Lin.

Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1965, Yuan Goang-Ming graduated from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts and went on to earn a master’s degree in Germany, attending the Institute for New Media in Frankfurt and the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design.

Yuan’s practice reflects an expertise with technology honed during his studies in Germany. Each work is meticulously engineered, often using sophisticated digital and mechanical systems which the artist builds himself.

The Asian Art Museum’s 2025 exhibition Yuan Goang-Ming: Everyday War is the artist’s first solo show in the United States.
