Collection FAQ

How many objects are in the collection?

More than 18,000 objects make up the collection of the Asian Art Museum. Over 12,500 of these objects can be viewed through the Online Collection. 

How many objects were given by Avery Brundage?

During his life and through his estate, Avery Brundage donated approximately 7,700 objects to the museum. Browse more than 5,000 objects from the Avery Brundage Collection. 

Is the entire collection on view?

Because of constraints of space, light sensitivity and special exhibition needs, around 2,500 objects are on view in the museum’s galleries at any time. Approximately 10% of this number consists of light-sensitive works that are rotated on a regular basis.

How can I make a gift of art to the museum collection?

The collection grows through the generosity of donors, both through outright gifts of art or donations to the acquisitions fund. Learn about making a gift of art. 

Can I request a digital image of an object in the collection for my paper or project?

Can I access collections not on view?
The objects housed in the museum’s storage area are available to the public for serious study Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m,, by appointment with the curatorial department. For information about appointments in the storage area, please visit Access to Collections Not on View.
How can I request an object loan for an exhibition?

The Asian Art Museum considers the loan of artworks from the collections to accredited arts institutions. Please see our instructions for making a loan request.
